Background

As part of Shepherd’s expansion into the Builder’s Risk market, a key strategic focus has been to intentionally cross-sell the product alongside our established casualty offerings. In this case, Shepherd was initially engaged to underwrite the client’s casualty program, successfully placing the General Liability and Lead Excess coverage.

Following the success of the casualty placement, Shepherd requested the opportunity to review the Builder’s Risk program directly with the broker to provide a coordinated solution. The strength of our performance, responsiveness, and underwriting partnership on the casualty program positioned Shepherd as a natural extension for the Builder’s Risk placement.

How it came together

Having already underwritten the casualty program, our team entered the Builder’s Risk review with a deep understanding of the client’s overall risk profile. This continuity is a core advantage of Shepherd’s underwriting platform, which enables a holistic evaluation of risk across multiple lines of coverage and allows our teams to move efficiently between products.

Flexibility throughout the quoting process was another key differentiator. As market conditions continue to pressure deductibles—particularly for weather-related perils—Shepherd worked closely with the broker to structure terms aligned with the client’s risk tolerance. We were able to offer a competitive 2% convective storm deductible capped at $150,000, delivering meaningful value to the client and addressing a critical concern in the placement.

Shepherd ultimately secured the program due to our ability to provide a coordinated solution across both casualty and property lines. By delivering a combined coverage approach, we created a seamless experience for the broker, simplified the quoting and placement process, and provided the client with confidence that their coverage needs were fully met.
