Our thesis is that technology can solve the sustainability challenges facing commercial insurance, and to accomplish this we’re building a platform that incentivizes our clients to adopt the best tools when they buy our coverage. Across construction and other commercial markets, technology is available but fundamentally underutilized, despite the potential for improving loss outcomes and stopping this crisis.

About you

We’re looking for strong candidates to become the first business operations lead at Shepherd. You will work cross-functionally with our insurance, underwriting, product, and engineering teams to support our data analysis, financial reporting, and business research. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic startup experiencing rapid growth across a diverse set of product offerings.

The dream candidate

  • 3-5 years in an ops or operations management role at a software or fintech (financial services) business

  • Advanced in both SQL and Excel

  • You are detail oriented and comfortable working with complex datasets

  • You hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree

  • You have a strong business acumen and willingness to operate in unstructured environments where you’ll own projects independently

  • You are proficient working in dashboarding tools such as Metabase, Tableau, Looker, etc.

  • You are organized and have the ability to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously

About the role

Shepherd is building a better and faster way to underwrite property & casualty insurance, using new and innovative data sources. Our goal is to leverage our technology and data to make quick, informed, underwriting decisions tailored to our clients’ specific needs. The successful candidate will:

  • Take ownership of Shepherd’s operational datasets and standardize our data modeling in a system of record

  • Enable faster iteration cycles for Shepherd team members by owning preparation and analysis of internal results regarding submission KPIs, GTM funnel.

  • Easily identify business and operational trends on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis

  • Be responsible for tracking underwriting results in support of Shepherd’s Insurance and Actuarial teams, including Gross Written Premium breakdowns, Earned Premium Analysis, Loss Performance, and more.

  • Own the preparation of account level P&L statements as well as product line P&L

  • Become the primary point of contact for internal renewal tracking and rate analysis

  • Take an active role in finance operations and premium flows internally and externally

  • Be adaptable and creative in a fast paced startup environment

  • Effectively communicate with underwriting, product and engineering teams and manage internal cross-functional communication. Strong teamwork and communication skills are a must!
